‘A Giant Leap for Tommy Hegarty’ – Report by Ethan
On the 15th of June a giant marathon took place in London but today and many attended it, we will be focusing on the winner Tommy Hegarty.
This overwhelming Irish man has come back from a bad injury he got five months ago but now he has come back and was fit to run again. On this amazing
thirty-seven km run his goal was only to finish the marathon but he got more than he asked for and ended up winning the race. Here are a few words from Tommy, “It was an amazing race, I couldn’t believe I recovered from my broken leg in only five months, maybe because I got lots of physio , but I never expected to win. So I would like to thank all the people that supported me.”
This man from Mayo has won for his home county and is proud of it. He said with this triumph he will attend more marathons to raise more money for charity. of June a giant marathon took place in London and many attended it,
‘Irish Man Conquered Marathon’ – Report by Alex
On the 1st of October the London marathon took place. It takes place for charity, as the money goes to cancer research. Anyone can take part but the big part about it was the irish runner Seán Stenson.
Seán Stenson is an irish runner who has done probably every marathon. Seán had broken both his legs and the doctor said he had to get them cut off, as both legs were so badly hurt. He had to run up steep hills and stretch to recover.
Twenty minutes into the race he stopped but he found hope in him and finished the race in first. A few words from Seán, “I never thought I would do it”. Seán was overwhelmed at his time of 2:26:14. At the end Seán received a boutique of flowers and his medal. He also got a round of applause.
The money Seán raised will go to the Mayo Roscommon hospice. An onlooker at the marathon told us, “Seán had stopped running after ten km and gave up, but he just started running again, it was amazing what happened.” Seán will run more marathons in the coming years and hopes to compete at the Olympics. Seán raised one hundred and seventy four euro for charity.
“Fisher Wins London Marathon” – Report by Mark Redmond
On Monday the 12th of September on the 10th anniversary of the London marathon, it was a good day for the Irish runner Fathy Fisher.
Back in June Fathy pulled his hamstring and everyone thought he wouldn’t be able to race. But with two months of intense training he was as fit as a fiddle.
Before the race had begun I caught up with Fathy, “I’m determined to win” and that was that, he walked away and took his position. On your marks, get set, go! After a while one of Fathy’s trainers ripped open but he decided to carry on. A few moments later they were on the final stretch, in first was Paddy McDonagh, in second was John Tesco and in third was Fathy Fisher.
Suddenly Fathy found a burst of pace and shot past Paddy and John. He had won the race in emphatic style. After the race Fathy fell over and was rushed to hospital. Fathy was there for three weeks and when he came out he said, “I tore my hamstring again and I am forced to retire”. It was a horrible day to know that one of Irelands best runners will never be able to race again.
