Holes Reviews

Holes Review by Donnacha McHugh

Holes is a black comedy. It is about a 'camp' where boys have to dig a hole everyday. There is a boy named Stanley who is wrongly put in there. He was unlucky. He begins to meet friends like Zero.

As the story develops they discover there is another more sinister reason why they are digging holes. My favourite part of the story is when they run away from camp. They survive then by eating onions. Eventually they return to camp because they find a suitcase with Stanley's name on it. The warden takes the suitcase and punishes them when they go back.

The ending of the book is weak because the author leaves so many questions unanswered for the reader and gets lazy. I would definitely recommend this book. Rating 8/10.

Holes by James Swift

Holes is a book about a boy named Stanley Yelnats  and his story at Camp Green Lake. The story begins with Stanley walking down the street. As he walks out from beneath an overpass a pair of shoes fall from the sky and hit him on the head. It turns out these were Clyde Livingston's shoes and Stanley is sent to Camp Green Lake as punishment.

At Camp Green Lake Stanley must dig  a hole everyday that is five foot wide and five foot deep his shovel is his measuring stick. Stanley meets some other boys named X-Ray, Armpit, Squid, Magnet, Zigzag and Zero. After many days of digging Stanley finds a gold tube which X-Ray takes off him and shows to Mr Sir who then shows it to the warden who gives him the day off.

Soon after Zero runs away and Stanley goes after him. They take refuge on Big Thumb (a mountain) and survive by eating onions that they find. The two friends eventually go back but on their way they stop at the hole where Stanley found the gold tube. After digging up the hole the boys find a briefcase full of treasure. That day the boys are released and Camp Green Lake is closed and turned into a girl scout camp.

I recommend this book and give it a 9 out of ten. (-:

The Experts View by Tomás Waldron

Award Winning children's book Holes by Louis Sacher was voted Children's Novel of the Year yesterday. We asked a 12 year old boy what he thought.............The child replied "It was OK. You know boring in parts, frightening at times and funny sometimes too. I didn't like the way it changed from story to story and past to present. That got me a bit confused. Some of the chapters were needless, a complete waste of time. Louis Sacher got too cocky. Maybe I've focused too much on the bad aspects. Besides the pointless chapters, it had a good story line. It didn't really surprise me that the Warden was up to something sinister. As the story went on more and more of the mysteries were glued together to make sense of the book. The last bit of criticism for poor Louis Sacher is that he left too many unanswered questions. The book will sometimes make you laugh or cry or even want you throw the book out the window! That's surely what the author wanted...a response or a reaction from the reader. So, overall it was a good book compared to some of the other novels that we read at school. I rate it 7/10"

Review of Holes by Paul Walsh

Stanley Yelnats is a young boy who has a history of bad luck. Stanley is sent to Camp Green Lake, a juvenile detention centre for young boys. He is framed for stealing a famous basketball player's shoes whose  name is Clyde Livingston. He stole them from a homeless shelter or so they think.

Everyday he would dig a hole five feet deep and five feet across. His first week at Camp was the hardest but then he got stronger and his hands hardened. After an incident with Zig-Zag, Zero runs away. A few days later Stanley runs away too. They survived by finding refuge on God's Thumb. The lads go back to dig one more hole and they found treasure however the warden caught them but couldn't get near them because there was lizards all over them. After sleeping Stanley got out of the hole and so did Zero. Zero showed everyone the name on the treasure it said Stanley Yelnats .They went home and became rich

This book was decent. I thought the writer got lazy at the end 8/10.

Holes Book Review by Mohammad Elmahi

In my opinion the book " Holes" was a very interesting and enjoyable read. The five main characters in the story are "Stanley, Zero, The Warden, Mr Pendanski  and Mr Sir.The story is based on Stanley  and Zero's experiences  at  Camp Green Lake. The camp is located in the middle of the desert and the inmates are forced to dig holes five feet wide five feet deep to make them better characters and people. The motto of the camp is "you take a bad boy and make him dig holes and becomes a good boy."

During his time there Stanley  becomes friends with Zero and teaches him how to read. There were lots of twists and turns in the story and the ending brings a positive  and happy conclusion to the story. I enjoyed reading it and would recommend it.

HOLES BOOK REVIEW by ADAM KHIER

Holes is a pretty good novel. It's about a boy named Stanley Yelnats who is sent to Camp Green Lake. It is a camp for boys who have committed a criminal offence. But Stanley is an innocent victim who has been wrongly incarcerated. The boys must dig holes in Camp Green Lake the motto is "you take a bad boy make him dig holes and he becomes a good boy".
Stanley's family believe there's a curse in their family thanks to their great great no good rotten pig stealing grandfather.

Camp Green Lake used to have a village around the lake. The story happens in the past and present. It is like a jigsaw as you read on the pieces help solve each other.

Holes Review by Ryan Dyer

This is a review about a book called Holes by Louis Sachar. This story is about a boy named Stanley Yelnats who has a history of bad luck. This story is about the day a pair of shoes mysteriously hit him on the head. As his dad is trying to find a way to recycle shoes Stanley thinks it is destiny so he decides to bring the shoes to his dad and runs home but some police officer see him running with the pair of shoes and ask "Why are you running". They bring him to the police station and realise that they are Clyde Livingstone's shoes.

Stanley is given a choice Camp Green Lake or Jail and not realising what Camp Green lake is he chooses it and when he gets there he is first greeted by Mr.Sir and he puts Stanley in group D with councillor Mr Pendanski and the other boys Armpit, X-Ray, Squid, Magnet, Zigzag and Zero. He has to dig a hole every day 5 foot wide and 5 foot long. He gets a canteen of water and a shovel and is told "Your shovel is your measuring stick" and on his first day he got lots of blisters.

After a few days he started writing to his mother but after a while he realises Zero is watching him and asks "Can you teach me" Stanley rejects his offer until Zero says "I will dig a part of your hole ever day  and you can teach me" So Stanley agrees but the other buys don't like that Zero is digging a part of Stanley's hole and Zigzag started to punch him. Zero started to strangle Zigzag. Mr Pendanski shoots his gun and the warden comes and tells them off and Zero Runs off.

After lots of worrying Stanley steals Mr. Sir's truck. He drives into a hole and runs away from the scene. After a day he finds Zero, Zero looked like a pumpkin. They had a drink called sploosh it was nice but they soon ran out. They then tried to find refuge on a mountain. They found water and wild onions to live on. They soon returned to camp. They dug a hole and found a suitcase but just then the warden come with Mr. Sir. They were about to get the suitcase taken off them but then they seen yellow spotted lizards. They stayed awake all day. Happily Stanleys lawyer came and took him and Zero with her. Stanley found his parents and opened the suitcase the goods inside made them millionaires.

Holes Book Review by Naoise Hopkins

Holes by Louis Sachar, it was not good, nor great it was the most awesome book I have ever read and I am so excited to watch the movie because I been looking forward to find out the difference between the book and the movie.

The main character of the story was Stanley Yelnats (a.k.a Caveman) and in his group group D there was Zero, X-ray, Armpit, Zig-zag, Squid, Magnet, Twitch and their councillor, Mr Pendanski. At the start of the story Stanley gets hit on the head with a pair of shoes and the police came and they thought that he had shoplifted, then at the courthouse the judge tells him that he's got a choice between going to jail or go on an eight hour bus ride to spend 18 months at Camp Green Lake in Texas.

The best part was that Stanley escaped from camp green lake to the city to rescue Zero. The worst part would be the flashbacks from the wild west and the flashback where the fortune gypsy teller tells Stanleys not so good great, great, pig-stealing, grandfather that he and his family are cursed.

Before I move on to my ratings I would like to tell you my favourite and worst character. My favourite character was Twitch because his special skill was to break into a car and turn off the alarm. And my worst character was the warden. Sigorney Weaver played the part in the film and was so cool in Ghostbusters 1 and 2, but in Holes she was terrible with the Texas accent. And now for my ratings this book was so awesome I would give it ten out of ten. T-T-T-T-T-T-T-T-T-T-T-T-THATS ALL FOLKS.

Holes Book Review by Cathal Cosgrave.
Hello! My name is Cathal Cosgrave and I'm writing a review on the book  Holes. First off, I would like to say that I thoroughly enjoyed this book and would  recommend it to absolutely anyone! Anyone! Good things: It was very exciting and delirious and  has a fascinating timeline between 150 years ago and today. Bad Things: There aren't many bad things I can even think about the book, in fact I can only think one as I'm writing this review which is the ending, I felt the ending was rather poor. I think Louis (The Author) gets a bit lazy and does not make a brilliant job on the ending! (Sorry Louis!) Favourite Character: Zero, Least Favourite Character: X-Ray Overall Rating: 9.999999999 out of 10!

Holes Book Review by Jakub Zalewski

Hi my name is Jakub. Today I am going to be reviewing a book called Holes. I really like the book and I would definitely recommend it to you. My favourite character in the story is Zero. Zero was a sensible person but everyone thought that he was stupid. My favourite part of the book was when Zero hits Mr.Pendanski and runs away. The author of the story is Louis Sachar. My favourite adult was The Warden because she scratches Mr. Sir. Stanley Yelnats family has a curse that gives them bad luck. One day Stanley goes to court for stealing Clyde Livingston's shoes that he donated to the homeless shelter. He gets a choice to go to prison or Camp Green Lake. At Camp Green Lake he has to dig a hole everyday 5 feet wide and 5 feet deep.Mr Pendanski was the leader of the group. He would bring them to the place to dig the holes. The first hole was not that bad but it was hard for him to stick the first shovel into the ground.

Well that's all I am going to give about the story. For further information buy the book or watch the movie. I would recommend the book because it was more interesting. Anyway i would give the book a 9/10 rating because i didn't like the part when they went into the past.
